Campfire pizza anyone?

Svante Freden has been canoeing since he was ten years old, and bought his first canoe in 1973. Being an outdoorsman in Sweden for so many years, he has had much experience in the development of, and improvement on all kinds of outdoor kit.

One really useful creation is his outdoor reflector oven, allowing campers to make fresh bread, cakes, scones, and even pizza, out in the wilds.

Svante Freden makes each folding reflector oven himself by hand in a small outbuilding in Sweden. They are based on his own design and are extremely lightweight and durable. He uses integrated hinges to reduce weight and provide a nice clean look without any sharp edges; it has a handle on top and a wire rack for cooking. The oven folds flat when not in use, meaning transport is not a problem as it slips easily into your back pack, and it will last for many, many years of campfire baking.

With a reflector oven you can bake bread, biscuits, muffins, sweet rolls and pizza in camp. This oven accepts 9″ round pans (the saucepans and frying pan from the Trangia Stove work perfectly as baking-tins and a baking-sheet in the oven).

Here are a some tips on using your oven to get the ultimate experience.

You get the best heat when the fire is new. The big flames give better radiant heat to the sides than embers. Use the embers to grill whatever you wish to have with your bread.

Turn the pan every once in awhile because the oven is warmest in the rear.

For more courses, you can place more than one oven around the same fire.
