The first UK Tentipi Camp – The ProAdventure Gathering April 2015
May 20, 2015 Off By Peter CarolWhen we set out to run the UK’s first Tentipi camp we were scratching our heads about what people would want out of the event, we looked at the events Albert Dorp runs over in Germany and came up with our own ideas in addition.
We plumped for a variety of options to see what worked for the Tentipi lover and the prospective tentipi owner.
We chose a site that, though a little rough and ready has basic facilities and is close to our shop in Llangollen, North Wales. Next to the river, we could have camp fires, and not having access to a giant tentipi, had some shelter in the form of a roundhouse.
We organised activities including a nightline, spoon carving, fire lighting, axe throwing and canoeing, along with a variety of competitions including best dressed tipi, and a cooking competition.
In total we hosted 27 Tentipi tents and lots of people, Tim Gent, Author of Canoe Camping gave an evening talk, and Pete and Lesley of ProAdventure ran a canoe trip down the beautiful river Dee.
We enjoyed seeing so many tipi set ups, tarps were popular, as was the Eldfell stove, with over half the tipi owners keeping warm with their wood fired stoves.
Their were less children than we expected, but still a great event, with lots of chatting and a mellow feel.
For 2016 we are planning a better venue, less competitions, a play tipi, and perhaps a band for the evening if we can get hold of a big tipi.
